Use It or Lose It: The Call to Faithful Stewardship

Day 1: The Master Entrusts Resources

Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:14-15 (CSB)

Commentary:

Jesus’ parable begins with the master entrusting his servants with talents “according to their ability.” Each servant received a specific amount, reflecting the master’s trust in their capacity to steward his resources. This distribution highlights God’s intentionality—He gives us what we can handle, no more, no less. The talents symbolize more than money; they represent every resource God has given us: time, gifts, skills, and opportunities.

Stewardship starts with recognizing that everything we have is from God. The resources are His, and He entrusts them to us for a purpose. As stewards, our role is not to hoard or waste these blessings but to put them to work for His kingdom. The question is not how much we have but how faithfully we use what we’ve been given.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What talents or resources has God entrusted to you?
  2. How does recognizing God as the source of your blessings change your perspective?
  3. In what ways have you been tempted to compare your talents with others?
  4. How can you shift your focus from comparison to faithfulness?

Thought of the Day:
God gives purposefully—what He’s entrusted to you is exactly what you need to glorify Him.

Song:
“Be Thou My Vision” (Traditional Hymn)

Prayer Focus:
Ask God to help you recognize and appreciate the resources He has entrusted to you.

Day 2: The Call to Faithfulness

Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:16-18 (CSB)

Commentary:

The first two servants immediately went to work, doubling their master’s investment. Their actions demonstrate faithfulness in seizing opportunities to multiply what was entrusted to them. In contrast, the third servant buried his talent out of fear, wasting the potential of his master’s gift. Faithfulness requires action. It’s not enough to acknowledge God’s gifts; we must use them courageously and purposefully.

Fear often paralyzes us, causing us to hold back instead of stepping out in faith. But God does not call us to play it safe; He calls us to trust Him and take risks for His kingdom. Faithful stewardship is marked by a willingness to act, even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How have you seen fear hold you back from using your gifts?
  2. What steps can you take to act faithfully with what God has entrusted to you?
  3. How does trusting God help you overcome fear in stewardship?
  4. What opportunities are before you right now to serve and multiply?

Thought of the Day:
Faithfulness requires action—step forward and trust God to work through you.

Song:
“Great Is Thy Faithfulness” (Traditional Hymn)

Prayer Focus:
Pray for courage to step out in faith and use your resources for God’s glory.

Day 3: Accountability and Reward

Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:19-23 (CSB)

Commentary:

The master’s return brings a time of accountability. The faithful servants are rewarded, not just for their results, but for their faithfulness in managing their master’s resources. The master’s words, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” reveal God’s delight in those who honor Him with diligence and devotion.

God values faithfulness over success by worldly standards. When we work for Him, our motivation should be to please Him, not to seek personal gain or recognition. Our reward is not just in material blessings but in sharing the joy of our Master. Faithful stewardship connects us to God’s heart, bringing us into deeper relationship with Him.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What does faithfulness look like in your daily life?
  2. How do you stay focused on God’s approval rather than human recognition?
  3. How does the promise of sharing in God’s joy inspire you?
  4. What motivates you to keep working faithfully, even when it’s hard?

Thought of the Day:
The ultimate reward for faithful stewardship is hearing, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Song:
“Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” (Traditional Hymn)

Prayer Focus:
Ask God to help you remain faithful in your stewardship and to keep your heart focused on Him.

Day 4: The Danger of Waste

Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:24-30 (CSB)

Commentary:

The one-talent servant’s fear and inaction led to his condemnation. By burying the talent, he rejected his master’s trust and squandered the opportunity to glorify him. This servant’s failure wasn’t just about laziness—it revealed a heart disconnected from his master’s purposes.

When we fail to use what God has given us, we waste opportunities to build His kingdom. God calls us to live with purpose and intentionality, not out of fear or self-preservation. Every resource, no matter how small, has the potential to impact eternity when used for His glory.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What fears or excuses might you be using to justify inaction?
  2. How does this passage challenge your perspective on responsibility?
  3. In what ways can you guard against wasting what God has entrusted to you?
  4. How can you encourage others to be faithful stewards?

Thought of the Day:
Wasted opportunities dishonor the Giver—use your gifts with purpose and trust.

Song:
“I Surrender All” (Traditional Hymn)

Prayer Focus:
Pray for a heart aligned with God’s purposes, free from fear and excuses.

Day 5: Abundance Through Faithfulness

Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:29 (CSB)

Commentary:

Jesus declares that those who are faithful with little will be entrusted with more. This principle of abundance reveals God’s desire to bless and multiply our faithfulness. The reward isn’t just material—it’s spiritual growth, deeper joy, and greater opportunities to serve.

Faithful stewardship leads to a life of abundance, not measured by earthly wealth, but by the eternal impact of our obedience. When we give our all to God, He multiplies our efforts in ways that exceed our imagination. The fruit of our faithfulness brings glory to Him and blesses others.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What does abundance in God’s kingdom look like to you?
  2. How has God multiplied your faithfulness in the past?
  3. What areas of your life still need surrender to God’s stewardship?
  4. How can you cultivate a lifestyle of faithful stewardship daily?

Thought of the Day:
Faithful stewardship leads to abundance that glorifies God and blesses others.

Song:
“Take My Life and Let It Be” (Traditional Hymn)

Prayer Focus: Pray for a life of faithful stewardship that reflects God’s glory and multiplies His kingdom impact.
